This presentation will focus on the upcoming book “Stakeholder Relationships and Sustainability. The Case of Health Aid to the Kyrgyz Republic.” By building on public health, political science, and development studies, this interdisciplinary work analyzes health interventions in a geographic region overseen in these fields. It goes beyond universal paradigms and detailed single-case studies by offering a thorough analysis of development projects to identify the factors applicable to similar initiatives in comparable contexts. A unique combination of discussants with different professional backgrounds and from several countries allows for an exceptional synergy of expertise, providing a rewarding environment for fruitful discussion and identification of further research directions.

This book is a product of the research conducted in the Collaborative Research Center 1342 “Global Dynamics of Social Policy” at the University of Bremen. The center is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation)—project number 374666841—SFB 1342.

The full book is available in open access: Stakeholder Relationships and Sustainability. The Case of Health Aid to the Kyrgyz Republic

The special issue workshop is organized by Dr. Aline Grünewald (CRC project A02), Dr. Tobias Böger (CRC project A06), Dr. Armin Müller (CRC project B05) and Prof. Dr. Paul Marx (University of Bonn). It brings together CRC members and scholars from the Global South to discuss their research papers on the historical dynamics of dualization. In so doing, the workshop builds a bridge between two research strands which, thus far, have been unconnected: the historical origins of economic dualism in developing countries and current debates on welfare dualization in advanced economies. The papers will be published as a special issue.

The workshop is organized by Dr. Lorraine Frisina Doetter and Julian Götsch of the CRC project A04 "Global Developments in Health Care Systems". The aim of the workshop is to bring together leading experts working on the historical and contemporary developments in healthcare systems in Kenya and Nigeria. In line with the research program of the CRC, we are especially interested in discussing the potential role of colonial ties, and nation-building that contributed to the introduction and any subsequent reforms of healthcare systems in the two countries. As this also necessitates an understanding of what systems actually looked like at the time of their establishment in the post-colonial states and during colonial rule, another aim of the workshop is to address the challenges of identifying and/or generating reliable data on that period.

The aim of the workshop is to enable CRC (and other interested) researchers at an early stage of their career to plan collaborations in the fields of research and teaching for the purpose of perpetuating their research focus acquired in Bremen. Dasten Julián (PhD FSU Jena) will contribute his own experience of knowledge transfer from Germany as well as the extensive South-North/North-South/South-South collaborations that have built on it. We will review a set of challenges that the global scenario presents in its institutional and academic dimension for the development of cooperation, research and scientific exchange strategies. Next to the issues brought up by the participants, we will analyze concrete cooperation experiences (e.g. Germany-Chile; Chile-Germany; Chile-South Africa-India; Latin American Networks) and we will identify some of the actors and axes that may be interesting to consider in processes of internationalization and design of research projects.
