Cash Transfers and Violent Crime in Indonesia

As the last event of the Jour Fixe lecture series in the winter semester 2024/25, Prof. Krisztina Kis-Katos from the University of Göttingen was our guest at the CRC 1342 on 29.01.2025. In her talk "Cash Transfers and Violent Crime in Indonesia", she presented the effects of the "Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT)" programme and discussed the interpretations of the extensive data with the participants not only from an economic but also from a social science perspective.

Research on social policy outcomes under Chinese authoritarianism

The B05 project "Inclusion and Benefit Dynamics in the Chinese Welfare Regime" successfully completed another round of field research in China, furthering collaboration with Chinese colleagues on future social policy research.

How culture shapes the diffusion of populism. New article in American Journal of Political Science

Dr. Nils Düpont from INF-project has published a new article together with co-authors Nina Wiesehomeier and Saskia Ruth-Lovell on the diffusion of populism in the American Journal of Political Science. They present the results of analyzing diffusion effects among 923 parties in 67 countries from 1970 to 2018.

New Website for the High-Profile Area Social Sciences

As one of the five key scientific areas that largely define the research profile of the University of Bremen, the social science high-profile area "Social Change, Social Policy and the State" has set up its own new website with the start of 2025. The CRC 1342 "Global Dynamics of Social Policy" is part of this alliance.

International Migrants Day

Dr. Gulnaz Isabekova-Landau is a postdoctoral researcher in the Collaborative Research Centre project B06 "Resource Boom and Social Policy in Authoritarian Regimes. A Means of Securing Regime Stability?", which explores social policies in Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus, and Central Asia. She is currently in Sri Lanka with the Centre for Women's Research (CENWOR) to mark today's International Migrants Day.

Research trip to Argentina allows investigation of social policy in the context of protectionism and nation state consolidation

Dominik Gall, doctoral researcher in project B11 of the CRC 1342, is working on the history of Argentine social policy from 1880-1949 and its links to the sugar industry in Jujuy from a global historical perspective. In October and November 2024, he not only visited the capital Buenos Aires for research purposes, but also travelled to Jujuy, the northernmost province of Argentina. The aim of the trip was to identify, localise and retrieve relevant sources that shed light on the nexus of social policy, protectionism and nation-state consolidation.

Social Policy in Autocratizing Context. Inclusionary and Exclusionary Processes

As the last event of our Jour Fixe series in 2024, Prof. Dorottya Szikra from the Institute for Sociology, Centre for Social Sciences (Budapest, Hungary) held a lecture on "Social Policy in Autocratizing Context. Inclusionary and Exclusionary Processes" on December 11. Her presentation and the subsequent discussion with over 20 colleagues focussed on social policy reforms in Russia, Turkey, Hungary, Poland, and India.

Governance and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers in Malaysia

Andi Luhur Prianto and Aqmal Reza Amri from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at the Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar in Indonesia are currently working as visiting research fellows at the University of Bremen. On November 27, they reported on the governance and protection of Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia as part of our CRC 1342 Jour Fixe lecture series.

Representing the Countryside in Africa and Europe

From 27 to 29 September 2024, the workshop "Representing the Countryside in Africa and Europe" took place at the University of Bremen, organized by project B09 "Social Policy and Rural Development in Africa". The workshop explored the question of how rural populations and regions are politically represented and whether there is a change or even a crisis in rural interest politics, as is often described and criticized in many contemporary and social diagnoses.

25 Years of Global Education Agendas: Emerging Actors, Evolving Mechanisms, and Changing Interests

On October 25, project A05 "The Global Development of Coverage and Generosity in Public Education" hosted a workshop titled "25 Years of Global Education Agendas: Emerging Actors, Evolving Mechanisms, and Changing Interests" to examine pivotal shifts in global education agendas over the past twenty-five years. Attendees included seven distinguished researchers from international institutions, the local project team, and invited commentators from Berlin and Hamburg.

Policy Transfer and Advocacy Coalitions of Pension Reforms in South Korea

To kick off the CRC 1342 Jour Fixe lecture series in the winter semester 2024/25, Prof. Won Sub Kim from Korea University in Seoul gave a talk on "Policy Transfer and Advocacy Coalitions of Pension Reforms in South Korea. From the Perspective of the Situated Learning" on 30 October. He is currently a guest researcher in the Collaborative Research Centre 1342 at the University of Bremen until the end of the year.

Development Pathways Podcast: What Comes After Social Cash Transfers?

Anna Wolkenhauer from project B09 "Social Policy and Rural Development in Africa" took part in a discussion for the Development Pathways podcast. The debate, which included also Jeremy Seekings and Hangala Siachiwena from the University of Cape Town, addressed the future of social protection in Africa.

Research trip to Peru: Both a challenge and motivation

Josefine Dehn, doctoral fellow in project B10 "Armed Conflict and Dynamics of Social Policy", spent three weeks on a research trip to Peru in August and September 2024. There, she collected data for her dissertation and the project in various archives and libraries.

A07 Project Team participates in the International Long-term Care Policy Network Conference

Meika Sternkopf, Dr. Johanna Fischer, Migyeong Yun and Davide Viero from project "Global Dynamics of Long-term Care Policy" recently presented their research at the 7th International Conference on Evidence-based Policy in Long-term Care. Bringing together academics, policymakers, and experts, the conference is organised every two years by the International Long-Term Care Policy Network (ILPN). This year, it was co-hosted by the Government of the Spanish province Biscay and took place in its capital Bilbao from 12-14 September 2024.

Health Aid and its Sustainability in the Kyrgyz Republic

Dr. Gulnaz Isabekova-Landau, a postdoctoral researcher in the Collaborative Research Center project B06, which explores social policies in Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus, and Central Asia, was interviewed by Crossroads Central Asia. The topic was her book, which was published in the Collaborative Research Center’s "Global Dynamics of Social Policy" book series.

Research trip provides unique insight into the history and present of the USA

Fabienne Müller, a doctoral researcher in project B11, which deals with the historical perspective of protectionism and social policy in Argentina and the US, is currently researching the questions of her dissertation in various cities in the United States. Her work focuses on the first half of the 1990s and the policies of President Bill Clinton.
