Research Data Management increasingly gained importance both in the general discussion on open science and scientific practices as well as with journals, funders and institutions asking for data management plans or replication material to be stored in specific repositories. But how is all this related to your daily work?

In this workshop we will start with the fundamentals of RDM (e.g., the FAIR principles, research data lifecycle, data management plan, metadata, repositories) before getting down to the nitty-gritty of integrating RDM practices into your daily work. At the end of the workshop, you will: understand the basics of RDM; get to know the concepts and rationale of FAIR data; and got the idea how and why file naming and folder structures on your computer, backup strategies or version control tools make your life easier and help you to meet RDM goals.

The workshop is held in cooperation with BIGSSS and BYRD, is targeted at PhD students but of course open to all (seasoned) social scientists.

Human rights based approaches are widely used to address various social and political problems in the field of education, child care, health and social protection. By stipulating an internationally agreed set of norms, human-rights based approaches provide a stronger basis for citizens to make claims on their states and for holding states to account for their duties to enhance the access of their citizens to the realisation of their social, economic and political rights. This presentation is based on ethnographic studies conducted in India, Nepal and Sierra Leone. It shows the role of human rights in re-shaping of education and social policy and makes a particular focus on the impact of these approaches on empowerment of marginalized groups such as ethnic minorities and indigenous women.

In this session, the Working Group will have a special guest - Jan Helmdag from the SOFI, Stockholm.

Jan is taking care of the data collection for the "Social Policy Indicators" (SPIN), previously SCIP, the "Social Citizenship Indicator Program".

The Working Group will discuss with Jan their current way of collecting and coding data on generosity and coverage, future plans, how they deal with harmonization topics – and of course, other topics brought up by the Working Group members.

Every CRC member interested in this topic and insights to the SPIN/SCIP data is welcome.

The goal of the CRC 1342 “Global Dynamics of Social Policy” is to analyze, understand and explain the spread of social policies since 1880 globally. For this, social scientists collect and process heterogenous data ranging from tabular data to interviews with policy makers, mainly macro-comparative statistical data and (historical) text data though. Despite an established RDM in quantitative survey research, data sharing practices in the social sciences – and comparative welfare state research in particular – are just evolving.

In the first funding phase, WeSIS – the Welfare State Information System – was designed in co-creation with and for the social scientists keeping the FAIR principles in mind. Achieving a mutual understanding among social and computer scientists led to a harmonization both in terms of the data itself, the documentation and storage and availability of the data that was and still is missing in welfare state research. Turning into a dedicated Infrastructure Project, the focus in the second phase shifts to extending WeSIS’ functionalities while implementing a “three pillar” strategy along the entire data life cycle that takes all projects on board – regardless of their fit to WeSIS. In this talk, we will focus on the challenges and solutions around building WeSIS and how this shaped the “three pillar” RDM strategy of the second phase.

WHEN AND WHERE?

The lunch-and-learn event will take place in hybrid form from 12-12:30 pm at MZH and via Zoom. There will be a 20-minute keynote presentation followed by an opportunity for questions and discussion. On site, we have planned an extra half hour (i.e. until 1pm) for personal exchange on the talk, general data science aspects or our services.

The internal workshop on the diffusion of Global Social Policy will mark the first stage of a collaboration of all projects in the A pillar of the CRC 1342. We will use a network approach to understand the effect of exposure to previous adopters on the diffusion of welfare policies across the globe and each project will participate with their own set of indicators. The goal is to create a comprehensive, unified comparison between policy fields.

Social networks have become a popular method to advance relational thinking in human geography. In recognizing the challenge of how to reconcile the tension between ‘structure and meaning’ (Pachucki and Breiger, 2010), we elaborate on the concepts of connectivity, contextuality, and reflexivity to overcome the dualism between universalist network science on the one hand and idiosyncratic network stories on the other. Based on a detailed meta-analysis of over 300 network studies in human geography between 1990 and 2018, we argue for and elaborate on combined methodological approaches to unleash the full potential of relational geography.

In the week from 17 to 22 February 2020, the teaching and research institutes of the University of Bremen and Jacobs University invite you to the first Bremen Social Sciences Week! A variety of events on the topic of "Societies in Transition" will highlight current Bremen research priorities from various perspectives.

The programme is aimed at pupils, teachers, students and the general public. All events are free of charge. Listen, watch, learn, participate and discuss at the University of Bremen, in the Haus der Wissenschaft, on the Internet, in Bremen's pubs and in CITY 46. As diverse as research and teaching in Bremen are, so are the topics that await you during the course of the week: from PISA, social movements, NGOs and their means of political influence, filter bubbles, surrogate motherhood and student housing to questions of social cohesion and the digitalization of the social sciences, you will find everything you could wish for.

Kenneth Benoit is Professor of Quantitative Social Research Methods and head of the Department of Methodology at the London School of Economics and Politics Science and part-time professor at Trinity College Dublin. His contribution to text analysis in political science should not be underestimated, where his development of computer-assisted estimation of policy positions from political texts remains a cornerstone in the literature. He maintains and created the QUANTEDA package for managing and analysing text data, and therefore is well placed to offer insights into the "big picture" of QTA, and what to expect in the future.

The goal is to explore the potential and limitations of optical character recognition (OCR) technology for the CRC. Each participant will bring data from his or her project, including, but not limited to PDFs of scanned book or photos of texts that need to be processed. In the workshop, we will try out different tools, review the results, and explore what workflows can best support the CRC in working with their data.
