Healthcare and development aid

Seminar in the MA Social Policy, summer term 2019, (08-350-M6-4, 2 SWS)

By combining the literature on development aid and healthcare, the seminar is designed to provide essential understanding of the dynamics in both fields. We will explore the theory and meaning of development, and its relation to healthcare on the example of programs fighting communicable and non-communicable diseases. The course provides insights into the work of the World Health Organization (WHO), USAID, German foreign aid, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and others in sub-Saharan Africa, South East Asia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. By placing the activities of these organizations in a broader context of the United Nations Millennium and Sustainable Development Goals, we will discuss current state and future directions of healthcare interventions. By the end of the course, the participants are expected to be able to critically reflect on actor constellations and power relations, as well as the ‘achievements’ and challenges of the development assistance to healthcare.
