When are survey questions about economic inequality too complicated?

Dr. Kris-Stella Trump from Johns Hopkins University (USA) visited Bremen for the opening event of the Jour Fixe lecture series of the Collaborative Research Centre 1342 in the summer semester 2024. In her talk, she gave exciting insights into her current research and, in the subsequent discussion with colleagues, exchanged views primarily on methodological issues in the creation and implementation of surveys.

13th International NordWel Summer School in Bremen

The 13th NordWel Summer School "State, Society & Citizen - Cross-Disciplinary Perspectives on Welfare State Development" will take place at the Haus der Wissenschaft in Bremen from 19 to 23 August 2024.

Governance in the co-creation of a web-based Research Data Management System in the Social Sciences

The Information Management Project (INF) wrote a report on the experiences with Research Data Management (RDM) in the CRC 1342, which was published in "Bausteine Forschungsdatenmanagement". In order to expand systematic RDM, the article addresses, among other things, the question of how the individual interests of researchers can be harmonised with collective goals in large collaborative projects.

Welfare and Inequality in Contemporary Southeast Asia: Paths to the Present and Future

As the last event of the CRC 1342 Jour Fixe lecture series in the winter semester 2023/24, Jonathan D. London from Leiden University gave an insight into his current research on Wednesday, February 28. He presented excerpts from his book "Welfare and Inequality in Marketizing East Asia".

Research trips to China and post-pandemic academic collaboration

The project B05 "Inclusion and Benefit Dynamics in the Chinese Welfare Regime" successfully conducted field research in China for the first time after China ended its zero-COVID policy.

Equal Care Day Northwest 2024: Care-work in the course of life in cities and municipalities in the Northwest of Germany

The Equal Care Day Northwest 2024 will take place on Thursday, March 14, 2024, from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Jade University of Applied Sciences in Wilhelmshaven. The event is open to the public, partly digital (12 to 2 p.m.) and free of charge.

New website for project "Causes of Inclusion and Exclusion: Immigrant Welfare Rights in Global Comparison"

The website "The Immigrant Social Rights Project (ImmigSR)" provides the latest version of the ImmigSR dataset which includes a number of indicators of immigrant access to state provided welfare benefits in 39 countries in five world regions for the years 1980-2018. Resources also include a technical report with codebook and country and benefit coverage details, as well as updates on expansions.

GATT/WTO and the Social Clause: Between Protectionism and Social Welfare

The controversy between free trade and labor standards was the central field of tension in Lucia Coppolaro’s Jour Fixe lecture on Wednesday, January 31. In her presentation she addressed the role of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the World Trade Organization (WTO). Prof. Coppolaro gave a historical overview of the interplay between trade liberalization on the one hand and social welfare on the other hand.

Diffusion of Disability Policies as Social Right: Cases of South Korea and Brazil

Dr. Jun-gi Heo, researcher at the GwangJu Public Agency for Social Service (PASS) in South Korea, gave a talk as part of the CRC 1342 Jour Fixe lecture series on Wednesday, January 23. Key questions were: What determines the progress of disability policy? How can social rights be strengthened within disability policy? Heo presented the two case studies of South Korea and Brazil.

Cooperation Between Colleges and Companies: Vocational Education, Skill Mismatches and China's Turnover Problem

Dr. Armin Müller, postdoctoral researcher in the project B05: "Inclusion and Benefit Dynamics in the Chinese Welfare Regime", wrote an article for "The China Quarterly" published online by Cambridge University Press.

Visit from the Far East: Social Security Reform in Transitional China

The first event of the new year was a lecture by Prof. Yuegen Xiong from Peking University, China. As part of the CRC 1342 Jour Fixe he gave a talk on "Social Security Reform in Transitional China. Post-pandemic Challenges and Policy Reformulations" on January 10, 2024.

Gabriella Skitalinska successfully defends her PhD thesis

Being a member of both the former A01, now INF project and working in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP), Gabriella obtained her PhD from the Faculty of Mathematics / Computer Science (FB 03) with a "summa cum laude".

Long-term care policy challenges in the aftermath of the COVID pandemic and opportunities for cross-national learning

As the last event of our Jour Fixe lecture series in 2023, Adelina Comas-Herrera from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) hold a lecture on Friday, December 15. Among others, she presented the Global Observatory of Long-Term Care (GOLTC).

Social Policy Dynamics in Iran

Dr. Yaser Bagheri, Assistant Professor of Social Policy at the University of Tehran, is currently on a seven-month study program in Germany. As part of the CRC 1342 Jour Fixe lecture series, he gave a talk on "Social Policy Dynamics in Iran" on December 6, 2023.

The opportunity to make a real contribution to research at the CRC 1342

In the framework of their mandatory internships Hüma Nauroozi and Ed Miller are part of the project A04 "Global Developments in Health Care Systems" from October to December, 2023. Hüma is a Bachelor student of Public Health in the 5th semester. Ed is a Master student of "Sozialpolitik" (Political Science) in the 3rd semester.

Global Varieties of Dualization – Historical Dynamics of Inclusion & Generosity in Social Policy

The workshop on "Global Varieties of Dualization – Historical Dynamics of Inclusion & Generosity in Social Policy" took place on November 13 and 14, 2023, at Bremen University. It was organized by Dr. Aline Grünewald, Dr. Tobias Böger (both from Bremen University and CRC 1342), Dr. Armin Müller (Constructor University and CRC 1342), and Prof. Dr. Paul Marx (University of Bonn).

How aid relationships may affect the sustainability of health programs in developing countries

Gulnaz Isabekova, research fellow in project B06 "Resource Boom and Social Policy in Authoritarian Regimes. A Means of Securing Regime Stability?", presented her book "Stakeholder Relationships and Sustainability. The Case of Health Aid to the Kyrgyz Republic" on November 24, 2023.
